The most precious painting in Polish collections, a portrait of Cecilia Gallerani from the collection of the Princes Czartoryski Foundation, is a special guest at Wawel Royal Castle.

The most precious painting in Polish collections, a property of the Princes Czartoryski Foundation, was painted by Leonardo da Vinci around 1490. It presents Cecilia Gallerani, at the time the lover of the Duke of Milan Ludovico Sforza. The portrait was purchased by Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski in Italy in 1800. In 1876, together with other elements of the family collection, it made its way to Kraków, where the Princes Czartoryski Museum was set up. After the Second World War, the nationalised museum was transformed into a branch of the National Museum in Kraków. After the political changes in Poland in the early 1990s, the Princes Czartoryski Foundation was incorporated; it is currently overseeing the renovation of the museum’s premises, and the most precious painting from its collection may in the meantime be admired in Wawel Royal Castle.
