In tumultuous times – “a firing tower”, and in times of peace – a prison for people who enjoyed high social status. Today, a perfect place to enjoy the panorama of Kraków and its vicinity.

One of two firing (i.e. adjusted to the use of firearms) towers of Wawel, it was built around 1460 in the reign of King Casimir the Jagiellon (Kazimierz Jagiellończyk). It was raised to reinforce the defences of the royal residence from the south, the direction most strongly jeopardised by an enemy’s attack, as the bailey of Stradom situated here did not have fortifications of its own. In times of peace, the guardrooms on the upper floors of the tower doubled as a prison for people of noble birth (while the criminals of lower estates were sentenced to imprisonment in the dungeon in another tower, known as the Thieves’ Tower. Today, having climbed 137 steps, you can admire a beautiful view of Kraków and its vicinity from the top of Sandomierska Tower.
