Katarzyna Bobiec and Dominika Borkowska are students of artistic mediation at the Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław. In Re Gallery they have arranged interactive spaces inspired by their performance activities.

On the ground floor MOCAK presents the photographic and text documentation of the painters’ plein air in Stropkov in Slovakia, as part of which Katarzyna Bobiec invited Roma children to join in. She gave them coloured crayons and asked them to paint whatever was nearest to them. In the exhibition that followed the plein air, she presented their paintings side by side with her own, treating the entire action as performative. Katarzyna Bobiec wants to enhance her own experience with those of the visitors to the gallery. The space is interactive: the viewers are encouraged to record their stories and mark their significant spots on the map –the artist may make them her future destinations.

On the first floor, museum shows the video from the action Do You Want to Walk with Me? by Dominika Borkowska. The performance consisted of the artist stretching out her hand to passers-by in a friendly gesture of greeting. The film demonstrates how very closed we are to others – many turn away and pretend not to see the artist. The recording is intended to inspire the viewer to break through the barrier of arrogance and to snap out of this isolation that has become such a social problem. The set of instructions that Dominika Borkowska has prepared motivates the visitor to take the initiative to strike up contact with others. To round the performance off, the visitor can write a letter that becomes part of the exhibition or – if posted into a special mail box – will reach the artist herself.

MOCAK Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow

ul. Lipowa 4

The combination of post-industrial atmosphere with a modern and functional glass and concrete structure provides a perfect framework for the presentation of important phenomena in the art of the last five decades.

A memory of the former production halls of the enamelware factory (known from Steven Spielberg’s film Schindler’s List) melds here with a modern and functional structure of glass and concrete, providing a perfect setting for the presentation of contemporary art. MOCAK has its own, regularly expanded collection of art (both Polish and foreign) from the last five decades, and its development can be traced in the successive variations of the permanent exhibition. It has been divided into a number of sections: conceptualism, video, sculpture, and objects. It is also the venue for numerous temporary exhibitions, including a large annual problematic exhibition confronting selected questions in contemporary public life with the artists’ outlook (the presentations made so far have focused among others on history, sport, economics, crime, gender, and medicine in art). Moreover, MOCAK regularly hosts exhibitions of Kraków Photo Month. The museum runs its own library with a book collection devoted to contemporary art and humanities, runs educational activities, and manages and implements research and publication projects.

Tickets: normal PLN 20, concessions PLN 10, family PLN 43, admission free to permanent exhibitions on Thursday
