This guy knows just how to warm up the public on a chilly winter evening. After all, he’s from Cuba, and his performances are filled with Caribbean heat. The trumpeter Arturo Sandoval captivates his audiences with his freedom and expressiveness, although many fans of jazz mainly admire his technical skills. Just listen to him exploring the boundaries of the register in A Night in Tunisia.
He quickly became staggeringly popular under Castro’s dictatorship, and the world finally opened its doors to him after he moved to the US in the 1990s. He had already been hailed as Dizzy Gillespie’s worthy successor, and Sandoval himself believed the artist to be his spiritual father.
The virtuoso first performed in Poland in 1972 during the Jazz Jamboree in Warsaw – yet Kraków is hosting the ten-time Grammy winner for the first time. On 17 February at Kijów.Centrum, Sandoval will be the first guest of the new cycle World of Great Music organised by the Cracovia Music Agency. (Artur Jackowski, "Karnet" monthly)
