Long-awaited performances, gala concerts in the castle courtyard and a dazzling premiere – it’s time for the 21st Kraków Opera Summer Festival!

To start with, we will be enchanted by The Tales of Hoffmann, featuring apparitions, mechanical dolls, troubled love stories and melancholy – but don’t worry, the mood is strictly buffo! Offenbach’s masterpiece has a long and complicated history and many variants, so this latest interpretation is a perfect opportunity for its director Michał Znaniecki to create his very own vision, working alongside the conductor Tomasz Tokarczyk. There will be dazzling arias (Olympia performs a veritable coloratura obstacle course!) and the popular barcarolle, but the greatest challenge comes from bringing it all into a coherent whole. Premiere at the Kraków Opera on 9 June.

There will also be reviews and recollections. The finale of the cycle Song – Theatre of Words resounds with Dvořák’s Biblical Songs and Szymanowski’s Songs of the Fairytale Princess. We will hear compositions for voice and solo instruments and for voice and orchestra. The innovative project Two Stories, One Dance – ballet with improvised music by Piotr Orzechowski and Krzysztof Ścierański – makes a welcome return, as do the acclaimed hit Don Pasquale directed by Jerzy Stuhr and the ever-popular The Haunted Manor.

Wawel welcomes the finest stars of music and dance from all corners of the world. The concert World Opera Arias features Slovak guests Eva Hornyáková and Daniel Čapkovič alongside Polish singers. The ballet gala Grand pas...! hosts ballet masters from Moscow, Bratislava, Košice, Vilnius and Kraków, as well as the Polish National Ballet performing Ravel’s Bolero choreographed by Krzysztof Pastor. The arcaded courtyard also presents perhaps the most famous opera of all time: Carmen.
