Permanent Resident

Krakow Jazz Autumn without Ken Vandermark? Impossible! Or, perhaps, as suggested by the title of the American saxophonist, clarinettist and arranger’s debut album, Unexpectable? This time, the residency of Vandermark and his ensemble lasts a whole five days (7-11 November). As usual, it kicks off with a series of performances by small ensembles, starting at Herve and moving to Alchemia for the next three evenings. During the grand finale at Manggha Museum, we will hear the premiere performance of the project by the full ensemble. Vandermark is joined by legends of improvised music – members of the acclaimed British group AMM Eddie Prévost and John Tilbury. The evening closes with a performance by the phenomenal DKV trio (Drake/Kessler/Vandermark), joined by another star of the free jazz scene: the trumpeter and saxophonist Joe McPhee.

Another promising concert is the performance by Amirtha Kidambi & Elder Ones (4 November, Hevre) – the vocalist and composer’s Indian heritage means the music boldly combines improvisation with Carnatic music of southern India. In turn, the Swiss duo Charlotte Hug & Lucas Niggli bring a blend of musical energy and paratheatrical expression to Alchemia (15 November). Another important element of the programme will be the performance by NU Band (24 November, Alchemia), led by Joe Fonda – a regular guest at the festival. (Artur Jackowski, magazyn "Karnet")
