Heart of Gold
The Eurovision Song Contest is increasingly less about good music and more about loud personalities and crazy choreographies. However, 2017 brought a breath of fresh air all the way from Portugal: Salvador Sobral captivated the audience with the simplicity and emotion of his performance. His winning song Amar pelos dois (Love for Two) enchanted fans of traditional romantic music as well as cold statisticians: he became the highest scoring winner of the competition, and the song has been streamed a record-breaking number of times.
The artist remains true to his heart on and off the stage: following the wildfires which ravaged his native Portugal, he donated profits from the sales of his CDs to the relief efforts. A few months later his heart failed him quite literally. Sobral underwent a successful transplant operation, with doctors telling him to take life quietly and to keep away from crowds. To the great delight of his fans, the musician is now well enough to return to the stage. He starts his springtime tour of Poland at Kraków’s Studio on 4 April. (Bartosz Suchecki, “Karnet”)
