Baroque and contemporary opera music resounds alongside vocal recitals. “The Opera Rara Festival expands the meaning of opera,” says Jan Tomasz Adamus, the festival’s Artistic Director.

“Jacopo Peri invented this style of reciting by singing admired throughout Italy,” wrote – perhaps with a note of envy? – Marco da Gagliano, composer and witness to the creation of this brand-new musical genre. And although we have been communing with opera for over 400 years now, the admiration hasn’t eased up and the genre continues to surprise us. This year’s Opera Rara Festival (31 January – 17 February) is the perfect showcase, boldly intertwining two visions of opera: its traditional aspects and the latest controversial experiments.

During the opening we will see the lyrical tragedy Hippolyte et Aricie; Jean-Philippe Rameau’s opera has been prepared by the Israeli director and performer Sjaron Minailo whose entertaining arrangements also encourage contemplation on the contemporary world. In Mozart’s comedy of errors Così fan tutte (directed by Cezary Tomaszewski), we will hear the amateur choir alongside professional singers. Tomasz Cyz reaches for Benedetto Marcello’s Baroque Cassandra and David Lang’s 21st-century composition Just to weave a story of war, destruction, love and loss. The festival also welcomes the return of Philip Glass’s ascetic and abstract A Madrigal Opera, interpreted by Krzysztof Garbaczewski.

We will also hear a wide selection of the most important instrument in opera: the human voice. There will be recitals by the acclaimed soprano Danielle de Niese, the young countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński currently captivating international audiences, and Patricia Petibon – a maestro of coloratura and a personification of French chic. Evelina Dobračeva presents a selection of Russian songs, Sophie Karthäuser performs Lieder and mélodies, while Adriana Kučerová sings Slovak songs largely unknown in Poland. Let yourselves be captivated and surprised! (Barbara Skowrońska)
