Photographer and artist Richard Mosse has documented dramatic events such as post-war devastation in the former Yugoslavia, cities in the wake of earthquakes and the lives of refugees and rebels in the Congolese jungle. The installation Incoming at the Bunkier Sztuki gallery enables us to witness refugees landing in Greece via thermovision cameras. We can see the images while remaining unseen ourselves from distances of thousands of miles away, making them a useful tool of tracing migration in Europe. Paradoxically, in Mosse’s work long distances bring audiences closer to the subjects of his photos; the unreal effect obtained through infrared imagery helps sharpen our sensitivity dulled by the onslaught of the news, forces us out of our indifferences and makes us ask ourselves difficult questions in the face of the greatest refugee crisis in Europe since the end of the Second World War. Ben Frost’s soundtrack of field recordings and electronics provides an important setting for Mosse’s images. The exhibition forms a part of the programmes of Sacrum Profanum and Unsound festivals. The latest developments in art, as well as the buzz of artists and curators await us in the pavilion in the Planty Garden Ring.

The name of the municipal gallery house and the exhibition pavilion in the Planty Garden Ring make reference to the characteristic shape of the building raised in the 1960s, literally the “bunker of art”. The concrete façade, into which remnants of a historical granary were set, led to the whole being quickly dubbed “a bunker”, a name that became officially accepted throughout Kraków with time. The “Bunker of Art” organises temporary exhibitions of Polish and foreign contemporary art as well as workshops, discussion panels, seminars, and meetings with artists, curators and art critics.
