If you go down to the woods today,
you're sure of a big surprise!
If you go down to the woods today,
you'd better go in disguise.
For every bear that ever there was will gather there for certain,
because today's the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic!
(children’s song)

The Jordan Park is home to a bronze statue of Wojtek the Bear. His right paw points in the direction of the statue of his commanding officer, General Władysław Anders. Surprised the bear had a commander? That’s because Wojtek was a soldier! In April 1942, Polish soldiers from General Anders’ army bought a brown bear cub from a young boy they encountered while on tour in Iran. Wojtek was soon promoted from private to corporal, and he accompanied the corps from Iran via Iraq, Syria, Palestine, Monte Cassino in Italy all the way to Scotland. When the unit was demobbed, Wojtek was billeted out and lived out the rest of his life in Edinburgh zoo until 1963.
