A rhinoceros that is tens of thousands of years old and live animals that we may sometimes even touch or pet: the museum offers various faces.

The museum operates as a wing of the Institute of Systematics and Evolution of Animals of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), and its history dates back to 1865, when the Physiographic Commission set up then by the Kraków Scientific Society incorporated what at the time was known as the Physiographic Museum. The symbol and hallmark of the place is the only whole woolly rhinoceros preserved in the world (together with skin and soft tissues), a fossil that is 30,000 years old that was discovered in Starunia (today’s Ukraine) in 1929. Presented besides the flagship specimen are also fossil remnants of mammoths and the cave bear. We can also admire here presentations devoted to contemporary and extinct molluscs, and minerals and fossils. Temporary exhibitions are held regularly, and frequent guests include animals: mostly small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.

Tickets: normal PLN 20, concessions PLN 16
