From its first edition in 2019, Royal Opera Festival has taken Gioacchino Rossini, the Italian master of belcanto, as its patron and the centre point of the event. One of the main goals of the festival is to present Rossini’s less well-known works.
Therefore, the 2022 edition brings his three rarely performed operas: a farsa in one act Adina penned for a theatre in Lisbon, Armida, a neverending love song with one of the longest and most demanding coloratura sopranoo parts that Rossini wrote for Isabella Colbran, his future wife, and Ermione, which Rossini himself called “my little Italian Guillaume Tell” (as he predicted, correctly, that the opera would be appreciated only long after his death). The programme of the festival will be rounded off by Rossini’s hugely successful Stabat Mater.
