The historical interiors of the oldest building of the Jagiellonian University and the mementoes gathered here recall the early history of the University and its eminent professors and students.

Being the oldest building of the Jagiellonian University, the Collegium Maius is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture that still captures the spirit of the Golden Age of the Kraków University (15th century). It was entrusted to the University Museum after the grand restoration conducted in 1949–64. Paying a visit, we will enter historical interiors that once served professors and students, including the Libraria, the Stubba Communis, that is the bygone dining hall, the Treasury, the rooms of the professors, the apartment of St John of Kęty (Cantius) – a saint connected with the University, and the Assembly Hall where a precious collection of paintings is on display. In the so-called Copernicus Room (the famous astronomer studied in Kraków from 1491 to 1495) you will find a collection of historical astronomic and astrological instruments from the second half of the 15th century, and an astrolabe from 1054. Kept in the Treasury are the insignia of the rectors: the 15th-century sceptres, chain and rings; a special place is taken by the so-called Jagiellonian globe from the early 16th century: the first known globe to chart the recently discovered America. The latest acquisitions of the collection are the film awards entrusted by Andrzej Wajda, the gold Olympic medal of Robert Korzeniowski, and the Nobel Prize medal presented to the University by Wisława Szymborska. The museum runs a series of interactive and temporary exhibitions. After a visit here, step into the Professors’ Garden, which is open from late April to the end of October, and relax.
