November Centenary

30 October 2018

Here it is at last! In the Polish consciousness, 11 November 1918 marks the return of Poland’s independence after 123 years of partitions. In Kraków, one of the cities which made the greatest contributions to liberation, the anniversary is particularly notable. This is reflected in the programmes of Cracovian institutions filled with joyful references to events from a century ago. As well as commemorating momentous times of our history, we also celebrate contemporary artists whose achievements are rooted in tradition. One such artist is Poland’s leading jazzman Paweł Kaczmarczyk whose performance at the ICE Kraków Congress Centre is inspired by compositions by musician and statesman Ignacy Jan Paderewski.

A century ago, Kraków was also the cradle of Poland’s arts and crafts movement, built on foundations laid by Stanisław Wyspiański. The tradition is recalled with the project “A Thing for Art. Design in Kraków”, bringing together events presenting and promoting Polish design. The extensive programme of meetings, presentations and fairs reveals the creative and enterprising spirit, typical of present-day Kraków. We also find it in myriad other events held this November. And this month’s concerts include lively gigs at student clubs, the experimental Audio Art Festival and events marking Krzysztof Penderecki’s 85th birthday.

Let’s celebrate!
