Plans for January

20 December 2018

It must be said that in our climate, the strategy of not leaving our homes on long, cold, dark January evenings approaches bearlike hibernation – even for fans of Kraków’s culture. But if there is anything to drag us away from huddling under blankets with hot tea and get us to head into the frozen outdoors, it’s the first-rate cultural events – and there’s plenty of them, even during this seemingly bleak season. So whether it’s the carnival setting of the Cracovian finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, the special visit by the phenomenal London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle or the Opera Rara Festival kicking off in January and featuring a varied programme and even audience participation, there’s something to tempt us outside.

And let’s not forget the cycle of events held under the banner “Kraków – the City of Stanisław Wyspiański”, entering its second year. This January marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of the father of Polish Modernism whose visionary approach to many fields of the arts shaped the collective Polish imagination throughout the 20th century and continues to shape it until the present day. And now that January doesn’t seem so terrible, let’s go on a walk All Around Nativity Scenes and take pride in the fact that the Cracovian tradition was recently added to the UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage as Poland’s first entry.

No time to hibernate this year!
